ERIC LYONS MEMORIAL FUND (ELMF)
Eric Lyons was one of the founders of the Association of Consultant Architects
in the early 1970's and ELMF was set up in 1982 to commemorate and
celebrate his life. The object of the trust fund is to assist the advancement
of architectural education in its widest sense through the sponsorship
of prizes, scholarships, awards and lectures. ACA have always
administered the activities promoted by ELMF, the latest of which,
in early 2003, has been a biannual student competition with subsequent
exhibition. Details of which appear below:
ARCHITECTURAL STUDENT COMPETITION 2003
"Inhabiting the City" - New ways to create accessible Housing
Eligibility Entrants should be existing Part I or Part
II architectural students at a School of Architecture in England, Scotland,
Wales or Northern Ireland and entrants must be entered in the competition
by their School of Architecture.
Offered by The Eric Lyons Memorial Fund, in association
with The Association of Consultant Architects Ltd and sponsored by the
Wates Group.
The Awards are structured to allow flexible input from
both Part I and Part II students, with projects to be taken from the
schools own curriculum. Each individual school will undertake selection
of suitable projects and take responsibility for submission of entries
by the due date. Assessment will be by a panel of judges. There is no
limit to the number of entries from each school.
Submission Dates by 5 pm, 31 January 2003 at: ELMF Competition,
ACA, 98 Hayes Road, Bromley BR2 9AB. Judging will take place during February.
Winners will be informed during March and there will be an exhibition
and prize giving in April 2003 in a London gallery.
Prize Fund A total £7,000 will be split between
winning entries of Part 1 and Part 2, with prizes in each section for
1st , 2nd and 3rd. places. In addition, there will be a special prize
to the winners in each section of the opportunity for one month's paid
work placement given by Wates Group the competition sole sponsors.
Judging Criteria There will be a panel of 5 judges,
led by Michael Manser and including Paul Finch, Marco Goldschmied, Peter
Schmitt and James Wates. Awards will be granted on the strength of the
quality of architectural thought and expression regarding new ways to
create accessible housing.
Exhibition There will be an exhibition of selected student
entries and prize giving in April 2003 at the Royal Academy of Arts,
Piccadilly, London.
