January 9th, 2013 SOAPBOX DEBATE: The RIBA Plan of Work: if it ain’t broke why fix it?

Venue: The Duchess of Cambridge, 320 Goldhawk Road, London W6 0XF

Speakers:

For the new RIBA plan of work - Dale Sinclair BArch MArch RIBA RIAS, Director of Dyer

Against the new RIBA Plan of Work - Alfred Munkenbeck RIBA ACArch, Partner of Munkenbeck + Partners

Preamble:

The RIBA Plan of Work has become a recognised and respected road map for design, procurement and construction, both in the UK and abroad and with all its peculiarities has provided a model defining how architects should operate for generations. It has evolved subtly over the years, and the RIBA is now replacing its hallowed alphabetical stages with new numerical ones that are supposed to support the new government initiative of BIM and make the multiplicity of other service providers feel equally warm and wanted.

The next ACA Soapbox over mulled cider will debate this. Dale Sinclair, who has been instrumental in the development of the new Plan of Work, will defend the RIBA’s proposal. On the other hand, Alfred Munkenbeck, a highly respected practising architect who is passionate about his art, will propose the motion and explain his concerns.

Costs:

£5 - to include a glass of mulled wine. Booking essential. Please email us on: office@acarchitects.co.uk to reserve your place.

April 16th ACA Debate: The Role of the Architect

Alan Baxter Gallery 75 Cowcross Street, London. EC1M 6EL

What do you think is the role of the Architect in today’s challenging times? Do Architects provide a professional service? Do Architects command the respect and ear of their clients or are they just subcontractors carrying out a task for payment?
This debate will investigate the role of the Architect in a changing world and the evolving services and opportunitues that are available to Architects.
Should Architects now be taking up the mantel and regaining control from planning consultants, project managers and builders? Is BIM the vehicle of opportunity for Architects to take the lead at the design stage? Do Architects really want to continue to concede aspects of their services to ‘planning consultants’, project managers, cost consultants and possibly event neighbourhood planners?
Come and join in the debate and let us redefine what an Architect really is. There is now the opportunity to integrate design so it and the professional Architects that create it, become a significant element of the Construction Process.

This topic will be considered by Brian Waters then debated with an invited panel of construction professionals who are:

John Assael, Director, Assael Architecture Ltd

Amanda Bailieu, Editor, BD

Angela Brady, President, RIBA

Beatrice Fraenkel, ARB

Andy von Bradsky, Director, PRP Architects

The panel will be chaired by Terry Brown, ACA President

January 31st ACA Talk by Paul Morrell, Chief Construction Adviser 6.30pm for 7pm

Alan Baxter Gallery 75 Cowcross Street, London. EC1M 6EL

Integration: Abdication or Adaptation?

It is a well-worn argument that no industry separates the conception, design, manufacture and operation of its product in so structural a way as construction. The consequence is a series of fractures in the way that value should be pulled through the process, with design too often under-informed by the practicalities of construction and by the intended use of the asset over its life. That much is reasonably common ground; but whenever change is proposed in the way the industry goes about its business, it is perceived as a power struggle - and the response is motivated more by an attack/defence of the status quo (with the accent on status) than by a genuine consideration of the long-term interests of the industry's customers. Architects are at the heart of this, and the choices they make, as a profession, a  business or an individual, will define their future and the shape of the industry for years to come. So, is integration a mortal threat to the influence of the architect, or an opportunity to adapt to thrive?

Panel: Dr David Mosey, Professor Will Hughes, Alan Eyre, Alan Baxter, Amanda Baillieu, Brian Waters, Trevor Sutters and Alison Coutinho Chaired by Terry Brown, ACA President
